Work Conditioning
A bridge between physical therapy and return to work for worker's compensation patients.
Work conditioning is a program for worker’s compensation patients that helps employees who are recovering from an injury or illness and aren’t in shape to go back to work. Employees who are out of work for an extended period of time are typically out of shape both physically and aerobically.
The program simulates work conditions and works on strengthening the whole body to prepare employees to return to work.
Employees perform exercises and activities similar to what they would do at work. Exercises and activities are designed to improve strength, movement, flexibility and endurance. Work conditioning includes:
- Strengthening exercises
- Aerobic exercise
- Simulated job tasks
- Learning proper body mechanics
- Stretching and flexibility
Our goal is to help employees regain their strength and endurance so they can return to work safely and without risk of further injury.
Work Conditioning is often a bridge between physical therapy or work hardening and return to work.
What to Expect
Work conditioning is typically a 4- to 8-week program. An initial appointment consists of meeting the employee, hearing his or her story and discussing goals. We will also review any previous records and perform tests to determine current limitations. Based upon the results, we will create an individualized treatment plan to address the specific needs of the employee and the employee’s work conditions. This appointment will be two hours.
Follow up appointments will be two hours, 2-3 times per week. Some employees may be seen more frequently or for longer visits when needed. The Work Conditioning program is run by Certified Athletic Trainers.
Who uses Work Conditioning?
Employees must have a workers compensation claim and work in physical job roles. They should be finished with physical therapy or work hardening programs and have a referral from their provider. Good candidates for work conditioning are employees who have been out of work for an extended period of time.
How to schedule Work Conditioning
Work Conditioning requires a healthcare provider’s referral. Patients can schedule themselves if they have a referral from their healthcare provider. They can also be scheduled through their provider.
