Orthopedics Frequently Asked Questions
When should I see an orthopedic specialist?
Not sure if you need an orthopedic specialist? Give us a call. We’ll help you decide if you need to come in directly to us or see your primary care provider first.
Do I need to be a patient of NH+C?
You don't have to be a current NH+C patient to take advantage of our orthopedic services. We welcome patients from anywhere, including Allina, Mayo, Fairview, Park Nicollet, and more. We are an independent organization.
Do I need a referral?
No, you do not need a referral. You can make an appointment directly with us.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Remember to bring any X-rays, studies, tests, or office notes from other health care providers that are relevant to your visit. These may have already been sent by your provider for you, but bringing these with you helps us avoid having to repeat tests or studies and helps keep your health care costs down.
What non-surgical solutions do you offer?
Not every pain or injury needs surgery. Sometimes all you need is some physical therapy and rest. We start with non-surgical options to try to solve your problem. Our non-surgical options include:
- Injections (medication is placed directly inside the joint to reduce pain and swelling)
- Physical or Occupational Therapy to increase your range of motion, build strength, and decrease pain
- Anti-inflammatory medications to decrease swelling
- Low-impact exercises like cycling and swimming
- Braces like knee braces and ankle braces that help distribute pressure away from the painful area
- Icing therapy and rest
- Activity modification
