Oatmeal Inspiration
January is National Oatmeal Month - more oats are sold this month than any other time of the year! To celebrate, our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists share their favorite ways to enjoy a good bowl of oatmeal.
"I like to add a spoonful of peanut butter to my oatmeal. It adds protein and makes it taste like a monster cookie!" -Rilee Froehling, RDN, LD
"Flavored oatmeal packets are convenient but can be high in sugar so I mix half of a flavored packet with half of a plain packet. I add peanut butter and frozen raspberries - it tastes like peanut butter and jelly!" -Dacia Talmo, RDN, LD
"I like oatmeal with walnuts or slivered almonds, milk and a teaspoon of honey. I also like it with milk and a tablespoon of peanut butter. It's super satisfying and keeps me going until lunch." - Courtney Eby, RDN, LD
"One of my favorite concoctions to add to my oatmeal is half a mashed banana, a couple teaspoons of cocoa powder, and a tablespoon or two of chopped walnuts. It's like having a brownie for breakfast! - Kristi Winkels, RDN, LD
"I mix steel cut oats mixed with milk and a splash of vanilla and cook them in the microwave. Then, I add a handful of walnuts, a teaspoon of cinnamon, a tablespoon of ground flax, and two Medjool dates. I have family history of heart disease and colon cancer so I like that this daily breakfast includes omega 3’s, is high in fiber, and is delicious!" -Kristi Von Ruden, RDN, LD
