Kids Bowel and Bladder Dysfunction

Do you know the signs of bowl and bladder dysfunction in children?

Symptoms may include constipation, incontinence (daytime or nighttime), and/or leaking.

Why does it matter?

Kids may have issues related to urine output and/or bowel movements. Constipation can occur when the rectum and colon are filled with stool. This can cause pressure on the bladder which may lead to issues with bladder emptying.

How can pediatric physical therapy help?

Pediatric PT can help kids over age 4:

  • Understanding normal bowel/bladder function
  • Strengthening and improving coordination of pelvic floor muscles
  • Addressing issues related to withholding urine
  • Straining with bowel movements
  • Incomplete bowel or bladder emptying

How to get help

Make an appointment with your child’s provider to discuss symptoms and to get a referral for pediatric physical therapy.
